Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe: A Tradition of Excellence

Owned by the Brunier family since the late 19th century, Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe is now run by the 5th and 6th generations. The estate spans over 100 hectares within the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. This is where the renowned Vieux Télégraphe cuvée is born, made from 52 hectares of red vines (all in one single block) and 6 hectares of white, located in the prestigious La Crau sector—famous for its large, rounded pebbles resting on a deep bed of clay.

The Vieux Télégraphe red cuvée, crafted mainly from 70-year-old vines (65% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, and 5% Cinsault and other varieties), is the estate’s flagship wine. Though production reaches around 200,000 bottles annually, it is celebrated for its exceptional quality. This wine is known for its remarkable aging potential, capable of cellaring for 25 years or more in outstanding vintages. A sip of a vintage like 1998 is enough to confirm its status as a true age-worthy wine.

The Vieux Télégraphe white (25,000 bottles per year) is a blend of 40% Clairette, 25% Grenache Blanc, 25% Roussanne, and 10% Bourboulenc. More floral than fruity, it is distinguished by remarkable balance and unmatched freshness. It is recommended to enjoy this wine within 4 years, or allow it to age 8 years or more in exceptional vintages.

The estate also produces several other Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées.
Piedlong, from 11 hectares on the stony Piedlong plateau and a small plot in Pignan, is made from 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre. It stands out for its richness, finesse, freshness, and beautiful minerality.

Télégramme (30 hectares), by contrast, is produced from vines under 30 years old located outside the “La Crau” and “Piedlong” areas. This Châteauneuf-du-Pape is more accessible when young, offering a supple and enjoyable drinking experience.

Lastly, the Clos de la Roquette white (3 hectares), from the La Roquette lieu-dit, is composed of Roussanne, Clairette, and Grenache Blanc (one-third each). With an annual production of 14,000 bottles, it is best enjoyed within four years of the vintage.

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe is highly regarded for its exceptional wines. While the reds enjoy international acclaim and numerous glowing reviews, they are especially appreciated by seasoned wine lovers who understand the patience required to experience their full potential.
In terms of both price and quality, the wines of Vieux Télégraphe stand alongside the very best of the appellation, such as Domaine de Beaucastel.
