Château Beaucastel
Domaine de Beaucastel: A Benchmark in Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Located in the northeastern part of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, Domaine de Beaucastel spans 100 hectares of vines, all in a single block, in the Coudoulet lieu-dit. Though its origins date back to 1549, it was in 1909 that the Pierre Tramier family took over the estate, later passing it on to his son-in-law Pierre Perrin, and today to his grandchildren.
The terroir, characterized by the region’s famous round pebbles (galets roulés), sits atop a clay-rich subsoil—ideal for preserving moisture and reducing water stress during the scorching Vaucluse summers.
Beaucastel has practiced biodynamic farming since 1970, and produces, among others, the Côtes-du-Rhône Coudoulet in both red and white, which represents about 25% of the estate’s total production.
The estate continues to vinify its Châteauneuf-du-Pape in keeping with tradition, using all 13 authorized grape varieties, a rarity in the region.
Among its white wines, Beaucastel offers a classic cuvée dominated by Roussanne, and an exceptional Roussanne Vieilles Vignes cuvée, known for its remarkable richness and aging potential.
The red wines are notable for their complex blends, with a significant proportion of Mourvèdre (about one-third), alongside Grenache, the appellation’s flagship variety. This distinctive use of Mourvèdre adds structure, depth, and longevity to the wines.
Beaucastel also produces a rare and iconic cuvée, Hommage à Jacques Perrin, a red Châteauneuf-du-Pape made only in exceptional vintages. Considered a cult wine of the region, it is highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs.
Domaine de Beaucastel remains a flagship estate of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, synonymous with tradition, quality, and aging potential. These are wines for those willing to wait—the 1998 vintage, for example, continues to shine even two decades later, proving the estate’s consistency and excellence over time.
