Presentation
The
La Landonne Guigal 2001 is a benchmark Côte-Rôtie from the northern Rhône, produced in one of the appellation’s most prestigious single vineyards. This cuvée embodies the power, depth and refinement that have made the Guigal estate world-renowned. The 2001 vintage offers a mature expression, where the natural intensity of Syrah is now framed by silky textures and complex tertiary aromas. It is a serious, contemplative wine, crafted for enthusiasts who appreciate both concentration and nuance.
Origin and Winemaking
- The terroir of La Landonne is a steep, south-facing slope of the Côte-Rôtie, rooted in poor, schist and iron-rich soils. These conditions naturally limit yields and concentrate the berries, giving wines of remarkable structure and depth. The continental climate of the northern Rhône, tempered by the Rhône river, favors slow, complete ripening.
- The wine is made from 100% Syrah, the emblematic grape of Côte-Rôtie. Here, Syrah reveals its most profound and spicy face, with an aptitude for long aging and a strong expression of site.
- Vinification typically involves long macerations to extract color and tannins, followed by extended maturation in oak barrels, a hallmark of the Guigal style. This patient élevage polishes the tannic structure, integrates the oak, and allows the wine’s aromatic complexity to unfold over time.
Tasting
- Appearance
Deep garnet core with a slightly brick-tinted rim, reflecting its evolution while retaining impressive density and clarity in the glass.
- Nose
Complex and layered, with notes of blackcurrant, blackberry compote and dried violet, evolving towards leather, smoked meat, black olive, tapenade and subtle truffle. Hints of graphite, pepper and refined oak add further depth.
- Palate
Powerful yet composed, with a full-bodied attack and a concentrated core of dark fruits. The tannins are firm but now finely woven, giving a velvety structure. Savory nuances of game, spice and mineral smoke stretch into a long, persistent finish, characteristic of La Landonne Guigal 2001.
