Presentation
Château Sigalas Rabaud 2001 is a refined Sauternes that captures the classic character of this exceptional sweet wine appellation. From a renowned Premier Cru Classé estate, this vintage offers a harmonious balance between botrytised sweetness, vibrant acidity and evolved complexity. It is a wine for discerning enthusiasts who appreciate nuance, texture and length rather than simple sweetness. In this mature 2001 vintage, noble rot has sculpted a wine of great aromatic depth, ideal for contemplative tasting and fine gastronomy.
Origin and Production
- The wine comes from the Sauternes region in Bordeaux, a terroir marked by misty autumn mornings and sunny afternoons that favour the development of noble rot. Gravelly and clay-limestone soils on gentle slopes help concentrate flavours while preserving freshness.
- The blend is dominated by Sémillon, accompanied by Sauvignon Blanc and occasionally Muscadelle, the traditional grapes of Sauternes. Sémillon brings richness and texture, Sauvignon contributes tension and aromatic lift, while Muscadelle adds floral nuances.
- The grapes are picked by successive selective harvests, berry by berry, to capture the ideal level of botrytis. Fermentation generally takes place in oak barrels, followed by ageing in French oak, partly new, which brings discreet notes of vanilla, spice and toast, and helps the wine gain complexity over time.
Tasting
- Appearance
The robe shows a deep golden hue, tending towards amber, with brilliant reflections, a sign of both concentration and the graceful evolution of this 2001 vintage.
- Nose
The bouquet is intense and complex, with aromas of candied apricot, dried pineapple, acacia honey and orange marmalade. Evolved notes of toasted almonds, spice, saffron and light caramel appear, underpinned by a subtle touch of wax and dried flowers, typical of mature Sauternes.
- Palate
On the palate, the sweetness is generous yet perfectly counterbalanced by a vivid, saline acidity. The texture is unctuous but not heavy, stretching into a long, lingering finish marked by candied citrus, roasted nuts and a delicate bitterness that adds structure and finesse. The balance between richness and freshness makes Château Sigalas Rabaud 2001 particularly engaging.
Food Pairings & Moments
- This Sauternes pairs beautifully with classic foie gras preparations, blue cheeses such as Roquefort, and poultry in creamy or slightly spiced sauces. It also shines with desserts featuring stone fruits, citrus or almond: apricot tart, crème brûlée or almond financiers.
- It is ideal for festive occasions, as an aperitif for connoisseurs, or as a highlight at the end of a gastronomic meal. A contemplative wine, it also lends itself to quiet, late-evening tastings, shared by enthusiasts who appreciate mature sweet wines.
Cellaring Potential and Service
- The minimum drinking window is now fully open; 2001 is an excellent vintage in Sauternes, and the wine is currently at a beautiful stage of maturity.
- The cellaring potential remains significant: properly stored in a cool, dark cellar, this bottle can continue to evolve for several more years, gaining in tertiary complexity while gradually softening its structure.
- Serve slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, ideally in medium-sized white wine glasses to allow the bouquet to express itself fully. Avoid serving too cold, which would mute the aromas and compress the texture. Opening the bottle a little in advance can help the wine reveal all its nuances.
