Presentation
The
Condrieu Bénetière 2001 is a refined expression of northern Rhône Viognier, offering a mature interpretation of this renowned white appellation. Crafted on the steep granitic slopes overlooking the Rhône, it combines richness, aromatic complexity and a distinctive mineral backbone. This 2001 vintage now reveals a fully evolved profile, ideal for enthusiasts who appreciate the patina of time on great whites. The wine displays the opulence typical of Condrieu while preserving an elegant freshness that keeps the palate vibrant and precise. It is a contemplative wine, best enjoyed unhurried, where each glass tells the story of its terroir and its vintage.
Origin and Production
- The terroir of Condrieu is marked by steep, terraced hillsides composed mainly of granite and decomposed mica schists. These poor, well-drained soils force the vines to root deeply, concentrating flavor and imparting a marked mineral character.
- The wine is produced from the Viognier grape, the emblematic and exclusive varietal of the Condrieu appellation. Viognier here delivers a singular balance of aromatic generosity and tension, far from more exuberant Mediterranean expressions.
- Vinification traditionally occurs in temperature-controlled vats and/or barrels, with careful handling of the lees to add texture without heaviness. A measured élevage, often partly in oak, brings subtle notes of spice and structure while preserving the purity of fruit and the saline finish characteristic of the northern Rhône.
Tasting
- Appearance
A deep golden hue with amber glints, reflecting its age and slow evolution. The tears are dense and regular, signaling a generous, well-structured wine.
- Nose
Complex and evolved, with aromas of dried apricot, candied citrus, quince paste and acacia honey, complemented by nuances of almond, beeswax and light oriental spices. Subtle notes of dried flowers and a mineral hint complete an intricate bouquet.
- Palate
Ample and velvety from the attack, with a silky, enveloping texture. The ripe stone-fruit flavors blend with honeyed and slightly nutty tones, supported by a fine, lingering freshness. The finish is long, with a saline and lightly bitter touch that balances the richness and invites another sip.
Food Pairings & Tasting Occasions
- This mature Condrieu pairs beautifully with:
- Roasted poultry with cream or morel sauce
- Noble fish such as turbot or monkfish, in buttery or saffron sauces
- Scallops, lobster or refined shellfish dishes
- Soft cheeses and washed-rind cheeses in moderate intensity
- It shines during intimate gastronomic dinners, vertical tastings of Rhône whites, or as a centerpiece bottle to open at the beginning of a meal for seasoned wine lovers seeking a nuanced, mature white.
Cellaring Potential and Serving
- The minimum drinking window is now well open; bottles from this vintage should be approached with attention, ideally from now, monitoring individual evolution.
- While some well-stored bottles can still offer pleasure, the cellaring potential is now on the tail end of its plateau, making it preferable to enjoy this wine in the near term to capture its remaining freshness and tertiary complexity.
- Serve at 11–13 °C, slightly cooler than room temperature for mature whites, allowing the wine to slowly warm in the glass. A large white wine glass is recommended; if necessary, a short, gentle aeration can help the bouquet fully open.
