Presentation
The Montmain Stéphane Ogier 2015 is a refined expression of Côte-Rôtie, capturing the elegance and intensity that have made this northern Rhône appellation legendary. Crafted by one of the region’s most respected vignerons, this cuvée offers a poised, contemporary interpretation of Syrah, where precision, purity of fruit and a sense of place are at the forefront. The 2015 vintage, celebrated in the Rhône for its balance and ripeness, gives this wine both immediate charm and significant ageing potential.
Origin and Winemaking
- Born in the steep, terraced slopes of the northern Rhône, this Côte-Rôtie benefits from schist and mica-rich soils that naturally limit yields and favour deep-rooted vines. The exposure of these hillside parcels encourages slow, even ripening, resulting in grapes of great concentration and aromatic complexity.
- The wine is predominantly made from Syrah, the emblematic grape variety of Côte-Rôtie, with the possible, very subtle presence of Viognier co-fermented, in line with local tradition, to enhance aromatic lift and finesse of tannins.
- Vinification follows a careful, plot-by-plot approach, typically with gentle extraction to preserve finesse. Ageing is carried out in oak barrels, often a mix of new and used wood, allowing the wine to gain texture and complexity without overshadowing the purity of the fruit or the character of the terroir.
Tasting
- Appearance
Deep ruby with purple highlights, displaying a dense, luminous core that hints at concentration and youth, while the slightly opaque rim suggests serious structure. - Nose
Expressive and layered, with notes of black cherry, blackberry and ripe plum intertwined with touches of violet, peony and subtle smoked meat. Hints of black pepper, graphite, olive tapenade and a delicate woody spice complete an aromatic profile that is both seductive and complex. - Palate
The attack is silky yet vibrant, quickly expanding into a mouth-coating texture supported by fine, tight-knit tannins. Dark fruit is joined by licorice, cocoa and a savoury, almost saline edge typical of Côte-Rôtie. The finish is long, precise and fresh, with lingering floral and spicy notes that invite another sip.
Food Pairings & Tasting Occasions
-
This wine pairs beautifully with refined cuisine such as:
- roast lamb or venison with herbs,
- duck breast with berry reduction,
- beef tenderloin,
- game birds or slow-braised veal,
- mature hard cheeses and truffled dishes.
- It shines during intimate dinners, gastronomic tastings with fellow enthusiasts, or as the centrepiece of a special celebration where its complexity can be fully appreciated over the course of the meal.
Ageing Potential and Serving
- The optimal drinking window begins around 2020–2022, once the structure has started to integrate and the bouquet gains in complexity.
- With its concentration and balance, this wine offers a strong ageing potential of 10 to 15 years from the vintage, and in top cellars possibly beyond, evolving towards notes of leather, dried flowers and truffle.
- Serve at 16–18 °C, ideally after 1–2 hours of decanting in its youth to allow the aromas to fully unfurl and the tannins to soften gracefully.
