Presentation
The
Volnay-Santenots du Milieu Domaines des Comtes Lafon 2000 is a benchmark red Burgundy from one of the most admired estates of the Côte de Beaune. Coming from a celebrated premier cru climat, this wine offers a refined interpretation of Pinot Noir, combining delicacy and depth. The 2000 vintage now shows the charm of maturity, revealing a complex bouquet and a silky, nuanced palate that will appeal to seasoned Burgundy enthusiasts.
Origin and Winemaking
- This wine originates from the premier cru vineyard Santenots du Milieu, located in the appellation Volnay-Santenots, on the southern edge of the Côte de Beaune. The terroir is composed of limestone-clay soils with good drainage, offering wines of great finesse and floral elegance, supported by a subtle tannic framework.
- The cuvée is made from 100% Pinot Noir, the emblematic grape of Burgundy, known for its ability to express the nuances of each parcel with precision and for developing remarkable aromatic complexity with age.
- At Domaine des Comtes Lafon, vinification follows a traditional Burgundian approach: careful sorting of the grapes, fermentation in vats to preserve purity of fruit, then élevage in oak barrels, a proportion of which is new, to refine the tannins and bring structure without masking the character of the terroir. The 2000 vintage has benefited from patient maturation in bottle, allowing it to reach a harmonious peak of drinkability.
Tasting
- Appearance
The robe is a medium garnet with brick reflections on the rim, testimony to its evolution, while still retaining a beautiful clarity and brightness.
- Nose
The bouquet opens on notes of red and black cherries, dried rose petals and violet, evolving towards undergrowth, truffle, subtle spice and delicate tobacco leaf. A fine mineral impression underpins the whole, bringing freshness and complexity.
- Palate
On the palate, the texture is silky and enveloping, with finely woven tannins and an elegant, elongated structure. Flavours of ripe cherry, raspberry and plum mingle with hints of forest floor, sweet spices and a gentle savoury note. The finish is persistent, precise and airy, showing the graceful maturity of a great Volnay premier cru.
Food Pairings & Moments
- This wine pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as:
- roast poultry or guinea fowl with jus,
- veal or pork tenderloin with mushrooms,
- duck breast with red-berry sauce,
- delicate game birds, truffled dishes, or aged soft cheeses.
- It is ideal for intimate dinners, Burgundy-themed tastings, or occasions where you wish to highlight a mature, subtle Pinot Noir that invites contemplative appreciation rather than power.
Cellaring Potential and Serving
- The minimum drinking window is now open; bottles from this vintage are ready to enjoy, offering fully developed tertiary aromas.
- Depending on storage conditions, the wine can still evolve gracefully for a few more years, but it is best appreciated while the fruit and evolved notes remain in fine balance.
- Serve at 15–17°C, ideally after gentle decanting for 30 minutes to allow the bouquet to fully unfold.
