Presentation
Magnum format lends a special dimension to
Château Haut Brion 2001, offering a slow, harmonious evolution of this already legendary Graves grand cru. This vintage from Pessac-Léognan stands out for its classic Bordeaux elegance, its depth of flavor and its remarkable balance between power and finesse. In 150cl, the wine reveals a more gradual development of aromas and an extra freshness on the palate, ideal for patient collectors and lovers of great shared bottles. The 2001 vintage, more understated and refined than some of its predecessors, highlights the precision and timeless style of this historic estate.
Origin and Production
- The vineyards of Pessac-Léognan rest on a mosaic of gravel, sand and clay resting on a well-drained subsoil. This unique terroir allows perfect ripening of the berries while preserving freshness and aromatic complexity.
- The red wines of the estate are traditionally based on a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure, depth and tannic backbone; Merlot adds flesh, roundness and velvety texture; Cabernet Franc contributes floral notes and finesse.
- Vinification is meticulous, with parcel selection, gentle extraction and long vatting to capture the nobility of the fruit without excess. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new wood, which brings notes of spice, subtle smoke and a silky texture while respecting the character of the terroir.
Tasting
- Appearance
A deep garnet robe with tiled reflections at the rim, testimony to a noble evolution. The density of color and the slow, regular legs in the glass announce a concentrated and still vibrant wine.
- Nose
The bouquet is complex and layered, combining blackcurrant, plum and dried cherry with notes of tobacco leaf, cedar, graphite and fine leather. Subtle aromas of truffle, smoke and warm earth appear with aeration, characteristic of great Graves wines at maturity.
- Palate
The attack is silky, then unfolds into a full, enveloping structure. The tannins are refined and polished, offering a velvety mouthfeel. The fruit remains present, supported by hints of cocoa, sweet spices and mineral undertones. The finish is long, precise and savory, with a lingering freshness that invites another sip.
Food Pairings & Tasting Moments
- This magnum pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as:
- Roast lamb with herbs or lamb saddle
- Beef prime rib, grilled or roasted
- Game birds, such as pigeon or duck breast
- Mature hard cheeses like Comté or aged Cheddar
- It is ideal for special occasions: family celebrations, gourmet dinners with enthusiasts, or vertical tastings of Bordeaux grands crus. The magnum format encourages convivial service at table, allowing the wine to open slowly over the course of the meal.
Cellaring Potential and Serving
- The minimum recommended drinking window is now open; the wine shows a beautiful maturity while retaining freshness and structure.
- In magnum, the aging potential is extended, and this 2001 can continue to evolve gracefully for several more years under good cellar conditions, offering increasing complexity of tertiary aromas.
- Serve at a temperature of around 17–18°C. Decanting 1 to 2 hours before service is recommended to fully reveal the bouquet and refine the tannins. Handle the bottle carefully and store it lying down, away from light and temperature variations.
