Presentation
Born from one of the most respected estates of the southern Rhône,
Château de Beaucastel rouge 1995 is a benchmark expression of Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape. This mature vintage reveals the full nobility of its terroir through a harmonious balance between power, aromatic complexity and velvety texture. The 1995 shows the estate’s signature style: a generous use of Mourvèdre, an unwavering respect for the fruit and a capacity to age gracefully over decades, now offering tertiary nuances of great refinement.
Origin and Winemaking
- The wine hails from the historic appellation of Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape in the southern Rhône, on a mosaic of terroirs dominated by rounded galets roulés over clay and sand. These stones store heat during the day and release it at night, helping the grapes to reach perfect ripeness while preserving freshness thanks to the mistral winds.
- The cuvée is a traditional blend of the appellation’s permitted varieties, with an important proportion of Mourvèdre alongside Grenache, Syrah and other southern Rhône grapes. Mourvèdre brings structure and longevity, Grenache offers generosity and sweetness of fruit, while Syrah contributes color and spicy notes.
- Vinification follows classic Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape practices, with careful sorting of the grapes, fermentation in temperature‑controlled vats and a long élevage in large oak vessels and/or foudres. This patient maturation allows the tannins to integrate and the bouquet to develop complex savory, spicy and leather notes characteristic of great aged Rhône wines.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance
Deep garnet color with a brick‑tinged rim, reflecting its age and evolution. The robe remains dense and limpid, with slow, thick legs in the glass.
- Nose
Complex and evolved, opening on aromas of dried red and black fruits, prune, fig and black cherry. Layers of leather, game, garrigue herbs (thyme, rosemary), truffle and sweet spices mingle with hints of tobacco and cedar, offering a profound and contemplative bouquet.
- Palate
The attack is silky yet ample, with perfectly melted tannins. The mid‑palate reveals savory notes of dried fruit, licorice, forest floor and Provençal herbs, carried by a still‑vibrant acidity that gives length and energy. The finish is long, persistent and delicately spicy, underlining the aristocratic character of Château de Beaucastel rouge 1995.
Food Pairings & Serving Occasions
- This mature Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape pairs beautifully with:
- Roasted or braised lamb with herbs
- Game birds or venison in sauce
- Slow‑cooked beef dishes and stews
- Refined hard cheeses such as aged Comté or Tomme
- It shines on gastronomic occasions, festive family meals or intimate dinners where time can be taken to appreciate its evolution. Decanting shortly before service allows the bouquet of Château de Beaucastel rouge 1995 to fully unfold.
Cellaring Potential and Serving
- The optimal drinking window is in its mature phase, offering fully developed tertiary aromas while retaining sufficient freshness. Well‑stored bottles can still be enjoyed, depending on provenance and storage conditions.
- This 1995 vintage was built for aging; at this stage it should be approached with an appreciation for its evolved profile rather than primary fruit. The remaining cellaring potential will vary, but it is best enjoyed over the short to medium term from now.
- Serve at a temperature of 16–18°C. If possible, stand the bottle upright several hours beforehand and decant gently 30–60 minutes before tasting to separate any sediment and allow the wine to open.
